Personal Injury Law

An accident can be extremely overwhelming and in the moment, it can be very easy to overlook important steps that should be taken afterwards.

These important steps include:

  • Stop your vehicle immediately, do not panic, and remain calm
  • Turn off the ignition
  • Leave lights or 4 ways on if safe, to warn oncoming traffic
  • Call the police and ask them to call emergency services
  • Show your Driver’s Licence, vehicle ownership, and proof of insurance to the other driver and police
  • Notify your Insurance Company as soon as possible

Further, there is important information you should document after the accident includes (attached to this blog please find the convenient, Your Accident Worksheet which fits nicely into a glove compartment):

  • Time of the accident
  • Date of the accident
  • Visibility
  • Weather
  • Road conditions
  • Amount of traffic
  • Speed limit
  • Average traffic speed
  • Estimated speed of your vehicle and the other vehicle
  • Number of vehicles involved
  • Traffic signs or signals
  • Number of people in your vehicle (adults, children, pets)
  • Names and injuries (if applicable) of passengers
  • Police information, including the Officer’s name, badge number and Department
  • Names, addresses, and license plate numbers of Independent Witnesses
  • Information about the other vehicle: year, make/model, licence plate number, province/state, driver’s age, name, driver’s licence number, owner of vehicle, contact information, insurance company with contact information and policy number, and any obvious damage to the other vehicle

Make a drawing of the accident scene, marking the direction of travel, point of impact, relation of traffic lanes, signals and signs.

Your Accident Worksheet - Keep It Handy

Auto accidents can be very stressful; shock and excitement will make it hard to think clearly. If you're involved in an accident, this worksheet will help you to remember the types of information you'll need to record at the scene.

Keep it in your glove compartment along with a spare pen.
